Project Title: Night in September
Artist's Statement: This project is a visceral exploration of the dark feminine and the complexities of human connection. Through movement, vocals and emotion, it deconstructs societal beauty ideals and dives into the depths of toxic relationships. This raw and cathartic journey leads to acceptance and self-discovery, highlighting the transformative power of release in the face of darkness.
On a dark and lonely September night, we find ourselves in the solitary world of a grieving widow. She mourns the loss of her lover, a relationship riddled with toxicity and darkness. In the shadows of her dimly lit house, she confronts not only the pain of losing her partner but also the turmoil within herself.
This contemporary dance piece embarks on an exploration of the dark feminine, unraveling the threads of beauty ideals and societal pressures that have bound her. The night unfolds like a wicked, drunken reverie, where laughter and psychotic behavior intermingle, masking the depths of her emotions.
In a mesmerizing juxtaposition of humor and turmoil, we witness her merry façade, a happy-go-lucky exterior that conceals the torment beneath. She toys with the idea of escape, a dance on the precipice of self-destruction, yet there's an unsettling comfort in the demise of her toxic lover, a bittersweet abandonment.
Through a series of distinct scenes, each representing a layer of emotion and a stage of grief, we are drawn into the visceral process of healing from a traumatic romantic relationship. The widow's journey is a personal odyssey, a raw and unfiltered story of shedding the shackles of a toxic bond.
As the night wanes, a sense of contentment and acceptance washes over her. The darkness that shrouded her heart begins to recede, replaced by the gentle light of self-discovery. The echoes of this dark September night resonate with the catharsis of release, the transformation of pain into strength, and the beauty that emerges from within.
